Growing up in the dry desert of New Mexico, culture, color and art constantly influenced every piece of who I was becoming. In my home I was constantly encouraged and supported to embrace being creative. Whether I was painting my bedroom walls lime green, producing music videos, taping together fashion magazines or writing the latest volume of Snapgirl (my super-hero alter-ego), there was not a moment where art and design was not involved in my childhood. It is safe to say that I always knew my future would lead me to a path that allowed me to embrace a visual way of thinking. Studying design and expanding my own creative perspective has proven this statement time and time again. Throughout various design experiences and opportunities, I have found myself straying away from the structural, rigid rules of classic graphic design and leaning more towards natural and expressionistic means of developing messages. Although my father, an architect, inspired a process of structure and organization in my briefing, planning and research, my mother’s hand-made crafting attitude seeps deep into almost every piece of design I touch. Instead of rejecting one way and fully adopting the other, I have decided to embrace both tendencies and discover the happy medium of strategic, structural, bold design that also reveals a humanistic, home-made and personal element.
